Play instigates connection; societal understanding that urges people to discern its multi-faceted layers and mechanisms during its engagement. Play could also be constructed to form a framework of rules and guidelines made to engage individuals in a world replicating actual life processes and systems.
However, when are we truly triggered to engage in play? Do we ponder this question only when our idle mind seeks for company? What about those minds that have been obligated to have idle situations for long periods of time? Isolated environments and curtailed limitations must have a different breathing environment; and to question how ‘Play and Engagement’ plays it’s role in such a system intrigues me.
I have written a compare and contrast paper that looks into 3 scenarios
· Play in extreme conditions for Astronauts, prisoners, sailors/seafarers,
· Play in collective situational environments containing people of same age groups i.e. orphanages, old age homes,
· Play in spaces where there isn’t freedom to engage in collective play or solitary play, without permission- places for juvenile delinquents.
As a larger goal I will be unravelling the difference between solitary play in stable free environments versus curtailed observational environments that practice rules and regulations. All the three scenarios are charted separately to then find commonalities and differences in their nature of play and behaviour.
